Enshittification of Bereavement

/ɛn.ʃɪt.ɪ.fɪ.ˈkeɪ.ʃən əv bɪ.ˈriːv.mənt/ From Cory Doctorow's 'Enshittification' (2023) + Bereavement.
Definition The process by which digital platforms that host memorials or digital remains inevitably degrade their quality of service over time, shifting value from users (the bereaved) to shareholders, often by introducing fees for accessing memories, inserting advertisements into memorial spaces, or selling user data to third parties.

The Cycle of Decay

Following Doctorow's model, the Enshittification of Bereavement proceeds in three stages:

Field Note: While enshittification is annoying for social media, it is traumatic for bereavement. When a memorial site goes behind a paywall, it feels less like a business decision and more like a ransom note for the memory of the dead.
