The Vertical Trap

In traditional archaeology, the earth is the primary container. It is indifferent and universal; a shovel works as well in Mesopotamia as it does in Mesoamerica. In Archaeobytology, however, the "ground" is rarely neutral. The Silo Effect describes the condition where digital artifacts are not merely buried, but sealed within hermetic, vertical structures—silos—that were designed to withstand competitors, not time.

This phenomenon is the nemesis of the digital preservationist. It manifests when data is locked into specific vendor ecosystems that do not talk to one another. When a company like GeoCities or Vine shuts down, the silo does not gently erode; it vanishes, taking the "grain" (user data, cultural context, and connections) with it.
