Narrative Provenance
The Vivibyte is the survivor. During The Triage, when an archaeologist examines an unearthed Archaeobyte and finds that its function is still intact—that it works in the current ecosystem without emulation, translation, or platform—it is classified as Living.
This is not because it is "new," but because it has survived. Its file format remains readable, its code still executes, its substance has weathered the technological change that petrified its peers.
Functional Invisibility
Vivibytes are often the hardest artifacts to "see" as artifacts. Because they still function perfectly in the modern ecosystem, they suffer from Functional Invisibility. A user plays an .mp3 file or views a .gif and sees only the content, not the ancient provenance of the format.
The Digital Archaeologist must overcome this cognitive bias. We must learn to see the "living" artifact not as native to the present, but as a "time traveler" that has survived against the odds.
The Gold Coin Metaphor
The defining characteristic of a Vivibyte is cross-epoch compatibility. Like a Roman gold coin that could be spent in medieval markets centuries after the empire fell, a Vivibyte retains its utility across technological eras.
The gold itself (the format, the protocol, the standard) is the substance that survives. The empire (the platform, the company, the ecosystem) may have fallen, but the artifact's core function persists.
Canonical Examples
The .MP3 File (1993-Present)
A 1999 .mp3 file downloaded from Napster is a Vivibyte. Its provenance is from the P2P revolution, the dawn of digital music liberation. But upon triage, its state is Living—it plays perfectly on a 2025 smartphone, just as it did in 1999 Winamp.
The human story: The .mp3 was a tool of rebellion, enabling users to curate identity through playlists rather than submit to the tyranny of the album. It ran parallel to corporate-controlled music distribution, a messy, chaotic, deeply human-scale ecosystem.
Plain Text (.TXT)
The most resilient Vivibyte of all. A .txt file from 1985 is perfectly readable in 2025. No proprietary codec, no deprecated plugin, no extinct platform—just ASCII characters, the bedrock of digital communication.
HTML 4.01 & Open Standards
A self-contained HTML page from 1998, using only standard tags, is a Vivibyte. Modern browsers maintain backward compatibility, allowing these artifacts to render decades later.
Field Notes
Key Insight: Vivibytes tend to cluster around open standards and non-proprietary formats. Their survival is not accidental—it's architectural. They were built on protocols designed for longevity, not corporate control.
Archive Path: Living Archaeobytes are preserved in the Archive as a "Seed Bank." They are kept for their utility, their content, and as direct source material for future application. They can still teach through direct use.
Why Some Artifacts Live While Others Petrify
The question at the heart of the Vivibyte: What makes an artifact survive? The answer lies in three factors:
1. Open vs. Proprietary: Open formats (.mp3, .txt, .html) outlive proprietary ones (.rm, .wma, .swf) because they're not dependent on a single company's survival.
2. Simplicity: Simple, well-defined standards survive complexity. Plain text outlives rich text. Static HTML outlives dynamic Flash.
3. Network Effects: Formats with massive adoption force ecosystem compatibility. The .mp3 was too ubiquitous to abandon.
