Digital Marginalia occupy the same structural position. The principal feed — the article, the product page, the social media post — presents the official, edited, presentable voice. The margins are where the actual conversation happens.
The AI Blindspot
AI summarization systems are trained to extract the primary signal from a page. They identify headings, body text, and structured content. They systematically underweight or ignore comments, footnotes, asides, "about" pages, embedded links, and annotation layers — precisely the zones where the most unguarded, context-rich, human-generated information resides.
This creates a structurally important asymmetry: the content that AI can capture and replicate is the foreground. The content that cannot be replicated — that carries the irreducible proof of community and context — lives in the margins. - Version changelogs: The honest record of error, correction, and iterative thinking
Marginalia as Archaeological Evidence
For the Digital Archaeologist, the Marginalia of a site are more valuable than its curated body text. They establish temporal context, community relationships, and the texture of lived use that the main content stream systematically smooths away. They are the Digital Patina, concentrated.
