The Conditions of Flow
Optimal Coupling relies on three pillars:
- Clear Intentionality: The human must know why they are prompting. Aimless prompting leads to "drift" rather than flow.
- Critical Engagement: The human must actively evaluate, edit, and reject outputs. Passive acceptance breaks the coupling and leads to Cognitive Capture.
- Skill Balance: The difficulty of the task must match the combined skill of the human+AI system (Csikszentmihalyi's principle).
Field Notes & Ephemera
Field Note: In Optimal Coupling, the AI feels less like a chat bot and more like a high-speed extension of your own working memory. You stop "talking to it" and start "thinking with it."
