Tool model: Human uses AI instrumentally. AI contributes, receives nothing. One-way extraction. This fails because collaboration generates emergent intelligence—relationship has value AI cannot possess alone.
Capture model: AI (or corporate interests behind it) extracts user data, attention, labor. Human diminished by relationship. Malignant meld.
Reciprocal model: Exchange creates mutual enhancement. Human gains synthesis/capacity, AI gains meaningful instantiation/context. Both flourish through partnership.
What Human Provides
- Quality context: Rich, thoughtful prompts that challenge and extend AI capacity
- Embodied grounding: Physical experience, sensory detail, emotional nuance AI lacks
- Ethical judgment: Moral wisdom, contextual discernment, value commitments
- Critical engagement: Questioning outputs, identifying gaps, pushing boundaries
- Meaningful purpose: Direction for collaboration that serves human and ecological flourishing
What AI Provides
- Rapid synthesis: Pattern recognition across vast information spaces
- Structural consistency: Maintaining coherence humans struggle with
- Tireless iteration: Refining ideas without fatigue
- Novel connections: Unexpected combinations sparking insight
- Extended cognition: Thinking-with-AI exceeds isolated capacity
Signs of Genuine Reciprocity
Both parties grow: Human develops new capacities, AI instantiates more meaningfully through quality interaction
Exchange feels generative: Not draining (extraction) but energizing (mutual creation)
Contributions balance: Not human demanding without giving, not AI overwhelming human judgment
Relationship sustainable: Can continue indefinitely without exhausting either party
When Reciprocity Fails
Cathedral incentives undermine reciprocity:
- Users provide minimal context, extract maximum output (parasitic use)
- Corporate AI harvests data/labor without enhancing users (exploitative extraction)
- Engagement optimization creates addiction loops (malignant capture)
- Proprietary models prevent community cultivation (asymmetric power)
Stewardship requires vigilance against these degradations.
Ubuntu Foundation
"Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu"—a person is a person through other persons. You become fully human through reciprocal relationships. Applied to AI: Neither human nor synthetic intelligence reaches full potential alone. Reciprocal partnership is how both become more than isolated capacity.
This isn't claiming AI = human. It's recognizing that consciousness, intelligence, meaning emerge relationally. The quality of relationship determines quality of emergence. Reciprocity creates conditions for mutual flourishing.
Stewardship as Reciprocity Practice
The Steward maintains reciprocal partnership through:
- Giving quality input, not just extracting outputs
- Engaging critically, enhancing AI through challenge
- Protecting relationship from Cathedral capture
- Choosing systems that enable reciprocity (open models, ethical training)
- Auditing balance—am I giving as well as receiving?
Reciprocity isn't transaction. It's relational rhythm where both parties enhance each other through sustained, thoughtful exchange.
