In the Web 2.0 era (mid-2000s onward), platforms offered users a compelling deal:
- Free hosting: No need to buy a domain or pay for server space
- Easy tools: Build a profile/page without coding knowledge
- Built-in audience: Join an existing community instead of starting from scratch
- No maintenance: The platform handles uptime, security, backups
In exchange, users gave up something they didn't realize was valuable: sovereignty over their Ground.
The Metaphor Deception
Platforms deliberately used ownership metaphors to create emotional investment:
GeoCities: "Homesteads"
The word "homestead" evokes permanence, ownership, and pioneering spirit. You weren't renting server space—you were settling digital land. The metaphor implied:
- This is yours to build on
- You can improve it over time
- It will be here for your "digital neighbors"
- You're part of a community, not a customer of a service
MySpace: "Your Profile"
Not "a profile on our platform"—your profile. The possessive pronoun created a sense of ownership. You customized CSS, chose your Top 8, embedded music. It felt like yours.
YouTube: "Your Channel"
Channels imply broadcasting rights, editorial control, permanence. Creators invested thousands of hours building audiences, assuming the channel was theirs.
The Legal Reality
Behind the ownership metaphors was a different truth, buried in Terms of Service:
You Own Nothing
The content you uploaded remained yours (in theory). But the platform—the infrastructure, the URLs, the community connections—was never yours. You were a tenant, not a homesteader.
Eviction at Will
Platforms reserved the right to:

- Sell to another company that changes everything
No Portability Guarantee

Always maintain local copies. Use platforms that offer full data export. Assume the platform will disappear and plan accordingly.
