The Cosmological Source
In Liu Cixin's novel, the universe is silent not because it is empty of intelligent life but because every intelligent civilization has concluded that broadcasting its existence invites annihilation by more powerful civilizations. Survival requires silence and concealment. The universe is a dark forest in which every hunter hides and every sound reveals a target.
Yancey Strickler applied this framework to the internet in 2019: the open web is the visible clearing. The bots, the advertisers, the extractive platforms, and the harassment campaigns are the predators. The intelligent users have retreated into the forest — private group chats, small Discord servers, subscriber-only newsletters, Signal threads. They are still there. They are communicating. They are simply invisible to anyone who is not part of their trusted circle.
Consequences for the Open Web
If the Dark Forest hypothesis is correct — and the available evidence suggests it increasingly is — the open web is undergoing a systematic quality inversion. The users who remain visible are disproportionately those for whom visibility is commercially necessary (brands, influencers, platforms) or those who have not yet learned to be afraid. The experts, the specialists, and the most valuable knowledge workers are in the forest.
This has a direct implication for AI training: the data that remains publicly accessible and scrapeable is increasingly the data left behind by the people who left. The model trained on the visible web learns from the remnant population, not the expert community that withdrew.
The Foundry's Position
The Foundry occupies an intermediate position: its content is public and indexed (it is not hiding), but it is dense, specialist, and structured to appeal specifically to the expert community it is trying to reach. The content itself functions as a Shibboleth Signal — it is legible only to the readers for whom it is written, without requiring concealment.
Usage in context: "The experts are in the Dark Forest. Your job is to build a clearing they're willing to step into."
